You will be glad to know that men can now have a new alternative for avoiding unwanted pregnancies in their partner. But the truth is that most men prefer a solution that doesn’t involve taking self medications. However, the new hormonal male birth control pill seems to be totally safe, efficient, and also reversible. Men can now have the options of a daily pill to be taken orally, a patch to be applied to the skin, regular injections, or an implant placed beneath the skin.
The contraceptive works by suppressing every day sperm production whilst sustaining normal testosterone levels. The methods used include the implantation of tiny rods beneath the skin of the arm to convey a type of progestogen to obstruct sperm production. And to maintain male sex drive, a testosterone replacement therapy is given, which might include receiving injections on a monthly basis.
The pill has an artificial hormone called desogestrel and also testosterone. This mixture blocks sperm production while sustaining sex drive. Like the female birth control pill, this one also should be taken daily. Tests have found that the male pill seems to be more effective than the rest.
The male pill is a great alternative for couples when the woman cannot take the pill due to certain side effects. On the other hand, the male birth control pill has some disadvantages as well. As in the female pill, the person must take the pill on a daily basis for it to work. And, it does not protect against STDs like AIDS. People are worried that introducing these male contraceptive pills could amplify the spread of STDs due to a possible drop in popularity of the condom. However, if you are more bothered about whether it affects the ability to have children in the future; you need not worry, it is completely reversible.
In addition to the pill, a contraceptive implant is also available. In this method, tiny rods are placed under the skin of the person’s arm. This delivers etonogestrel, a form of progestogen that has the ability to block sperm production. However, since the rods do not contain testosterone, monthly injections would be necessary to maintain testosterone levels. Basically, both the pill and the implant work in a similar fashion. The main difference is in how the male hormone is administered.
Any normal and healthy male can use men’s contraceptive pills. However, as it doesn’t offer protection against STDs, it should be used only by people in monogamous and formal relationships rather than those having casual sex. Some men seem to experience weight gain; this is comparable to what most women go through when using contraceptive pills. But temporary high cholesterol is not a big issue compared to what women may face while using the pill, such as blood clotting, dizziness, headaches, and nausea.
Overall, the new male contraceptive pills do show potential, and are easy to use, reasonably priced, and effective as well. But we don’t know for sure whether the guys would really prefer them.
